Commentary: MRI scans and AI could read what we’re thinking. The implications are terrifying

The recent breakthrough of using AI to translate MRI imagery into text raises the need for a new form of data privacy regulation – one that prevents thought crimes, says this University of Southampton academic.

SOUTHAMPTON: For the first time, researchers have managed to use GPT1, precursor to the AI chatbot ChatGPT, to translate MRI imagery into text in an effort to understand what someone is thinking. This recent breakthrough allowed researchers at the University of Texas at Austin to “read” someone’s thoughts as a continuous flow of text, based on what they were listening to, imagining or watching.
